I Checked Everyone's Numbers But My Own. For Twenty Years.
Two decades of wrapping cuffs around other people's arms. I knew every warning sign, every risk factor, every number that should trigger concern. And I ignored every single one of them in myself.
I need to say this before I lose my nerve.
I am a registered nurse. I have been for twenty-two years. I have taken blood pressure readings so many times I can estimate the number before the machine beeps. I have watched patients dismiss their readings, argue with their doctors, refuse medication. I have held clipboards and nodded patiently while people told me they felt fine.
And then one afternoon during a routine staff screening, the occupational health nurse wrapped the cuff around my arm and frowned at the screen. She took the reading again. Same arm. Same frown.
My reading was the reading I had been flagging in my patients for two decades.
She asked if I was stressed. I laughed — the way nurses laugh, which is really just exhaling loudly. Of course I was stressed. I had been running twelve-hour shifts on four hours of sleep, eating vending-machine dinners, and pouring coffee like it was a medical intervention.
But stress was not the whole story. The truth was simpler and harder to admit: I had not checked my own numbers in over three years. The cobbler's children, as they say, go barefoot.
The irony nearly broke me.
That night I sat in the break room after my shift ended, alone, staring at the same blood pressure chart I had taped to the wall for patients. My number would have earned a red flag on that chart. I knew exactly what I would have told a patient with those readings. And I knew I had been telling myself the opposite.

I went home and did something I tell every patient to do but had never done myself: I researched. Not clinical protocols — I already knew those. I looked for what I could do at home, immediately, without waiting for a specialist referral that would take months.
I wasn't looking for something to replace my training. I was looking for something to supplement it.

Daily home monitoring
Validated device, same arm, same time, seated with feet flat. Log every number. Bring the log to appointments.
Post-shift walks
Thirty minutes after every shift, even if I'm tired. Especially if I'm tired. The movement resets everything.
Real meals, not vending machines
I meal-prep now. Sunday afternoons. It takes two hours and saves me five days of sodium-loaded hospital food.
Half the caffeine
Two cups before noon instead of six throughout the shift. The difference in my afternoon readings surprised even me.
Sleep like it's prescribed
Seven hours minimum. I blackout my room, turn off the phone, and treat sleep like the intervention it is.
Five minutes of quiet breathing
Before I check my numbers each morning. It activates the parasympathetic system. I've seen the data. Now I live it.
